Careers 101: Human Resource Jobs in Michigan

Published on 2008-08-13

Schools:

Nearly 200 colleges and universities dot the two peninsulas that comprise Michigan, and thus there are plenty of higher education options in state to prepare students for human resources jobs. The largest institution, Michigan State University in East Lansing, offers a bachelor's degree in human resource management. The degree teaches personnel management to students who go on to pursue HR jobs. With three locations in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint, the University of Michigan is one of the top-ranked public universities in the United States. More than 200 degree programs teach students the skills they need to excel in jobs in HR. And over in Detroit, Wayne State University's School of Business Administration also awards undergraduate and graduate degrees that serve as stepping stones to HR and HR executive jobs.

At Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, students can major in human resources integrated supply management before they graduate and find human resource jobs. Further north, students begin their human resources careers by declaring Central Michigan University's human resources management major. Large public universities aren't the only places in Michigan to study for HR recruitment jobs, however. Smaller, private institutions such as Alma College also offer courses that appeal to students who intend to work in human resource jobs in Michigan.

Employers:

The beauty of these jobs is that they can be performed at almost every company, regardless of the size and focus, so new graduates can even work within the state's automotive, information technology, or manufacturing sectors. Some of Michigan's largest employers include Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, Chrysler LLC, Delphi, Domino's Pizza Inc., Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, Kellogg Company, La-Z-Boy Incorporated, and Whirlpool Corporation. Because the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that HR employment will grow faster than average during the next decade, the coming years should hold excellent job prospects.
