Fresh Profile: Computer Technician Jobs

Published on 2008-08-27

Because the rapid evolution of technology continually gives birth to more advanced computer systems, computer technician jobs will likely always be in demand. Computer technicians provide technical support to computer users for hardware, software and systems issues. When it comes to computer problems, they are the first ones on the job.

Computer technicians are also called computer support specialists and help-desk technicians. Usually, computer technicians who assist the customers of a company are called computer support specialists, while those who help their co-workers are called help-desk technicians.

Generally, the responsibilities associated with computer repair technician jobs include answering user inquiries, installing and fixing hardware and software, and documenting the details. These technicians spend most of their time on the phone listening to customer issues. Thus computer technicians must be good listeners and be able to ask the right questions to gather as much information as possible. Once they determine the problem, the techs who work at help-desk computer repair jobs guide the user through a step-by-step solution process by either computer or telephone.

But offering solutions is just one aspect of these computer jobs. Techs install and set up personal computers, including keyboards, monitors and other related equipment. They are also responsible for monitoring the company's computer systems to ensure everything is running properly. Other job duties may include training and assisting staff on how to use standard business and administrative software such as word processors, spreadsheets and database managers. This may involve writing manuals for staff and management and/or customers. As with all customer service jobs, computer technicians may have to deal with frustrated or angry callers. A major part of their job is to be able to keep calm and communicate clearly.

There are many educational paths that can lead to computer technician jobs. Most job listings require at least two years of college-level coursework in computer science, information technology or a related field. A bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems may be required for some jobs. Companies look for applicants with experience in general computer installation, maintenance and repair. Computer Information Science certificate programs are offered at many colleges and private schools. With further education and experience, computer techs could eventually move into other computer related jobs such as software developers, computer engineers, systems analysts and database administrators.

Job opportunities are available in several industries, but the majority of jobs are found within the computer system design and related services sector. Jobs can also be found in a variety of non-computer related businesses, such as administrative and support services companies, financial institutions, educational institutions, and health care organizations. Really, any organization that uses computers will need the aid of a computer technician at one time or another.
